CDNs are a type of internet infrastructure. Material owners, such as media corporations and e-commerce enterprises, pay CDN operators to provide their content to end consumers. In exchange, a CDN compensates ISPs, carriers, and network operators for hosting its servers in their data centers.
CDN covers several sorts of services for content supply: streaming of videos, download of programs, acceleration of web and mobile content, licensed/managed CDNs, caching transparent and CDN services, load balancing, multi-CDN switching and analysis and cloud intelligence.
CDN nodes are normally installed across several internet backbones at several locations. The benefits include lower bandwidth costs, improved page load times and more worldwide content availability. Depending on your architecture, the number of nodes and servers that make up a CDN varies, with some reaching tens of thousands of servers at several distance points.
Content requests are usually directed algorithmically to nodes that are somehow optimum. If performance is optimised, places that are most suited to serve user content can be chosen. This can be measured by choosing the lowest hops, the lowest network seconds from the customer that is requested, or by the best server performance available to optimize delivery via local networks. Instead, areas which are lower cost can be selected for cost optimisation. These two objectives tend to align in an optimally functional system, so edge servers near to the end user can perform better at the end of the network.
